2. Do three lessons on http://typing-lessons.org/

3. Do a posttest on http://typingtest.com/ , record your speed, accuracy and net speed in your agenda

4. Using Excel to make averages and sums

Sometimes you need to add up lots of numbers or make averages of lots of numbers.

You don't want to do this by hand with a calculator, because you may need to change the numbers later.

If you use a spreadsheet with functions, you can have the software do the math for you, which will make your life easier.

Using functions allows you to have the results of the information dynamically update whenever the information itself changes.

Get some data:

Use this link to get at least a week of data for weather in Duxbury:

http://www.wunderground.com/weatherstation/WXDailyHistory.asp?ID=KMADUXBU4&day=6&year=2009&month=11&graphspan=day

Make columns for: temperature, high, low and average

make a row for each date, at least 7

Use the AVERAGE() function to average your columns and rows

Make a chart that helps demonstrate the information in your dataset.

Do the same process with another set of numbers, real or imaginary.

Set up your first column so that it has the types of candy.

Your other columns should show how many, what kind and several attributes of the candies

The bottom rows should show averages and totals (A separate row for each)

If you do not have data from your halloween take, you can use this picture to get the contents of a sample Halloween treat bag.

Discussion:

  • What changes have you seen in your computer abilities since the term started?
  • How are you using these skills in your other classes?
  • How can you use these skills on assignments in other classes?

5. Assignments that you could use your new typing skills for:

In school, you have a number of classes that you could use your typing and computer skills for. At this point, it is important for you to identify these assignments so that you can improve your work on them. Getting your work between the school and home could involve a couple of techniques: Using a usb flash drive, or sending an email with an attachment of the file you are working on.

Make a list of each of the courses you have that have upcoming assignments that could involve typing.

List the teacher's name, assignment, and due date(s)

Put this on a page with a heading

Use tabs to align the assignment and due dates

For next class, bring in an assignment that you hand wrote. We will be using that in class.

4. Finish and print your shopping spree document with currency tabs

5. Centered tabs

  • Make three lists that will sit next to each other on the page
  • Use tabs to make them align on the center of the words.
  • The lists should be: animals, colors, countries
  • There should be at least five items in each list.
  • Bold the category title
  • Each list should be set up on a centered tab
  • You will need to put a tab BEFORE the first item on the line to get it to the tab.

Make another set of lists of the categories of your choice.

  • At least seven items on each list
  • Use centered tabs
  • Bold the category title

5. Work on your list with currency tabs.

     Currency tabs checklist:

  • A menu for a restaurant
  • Ten items at least on the list

6. Make a second currency tabbed list detailing how you would spend $5,000

  • At least six items
  • Prices should be from online sources.
  • Underneath each item, list where you got the price.
  • Use a right aligned tab for the vendor of the product
  • Before each item, list the product or stock number from the vendor.

Here is an example of about how it should look:

Shopping spree:

Quantity Product number     Description                                                           Price

1               CUPCAKE                MakerBot  CNC Basic Kit                                 $750.00
